Beginner Etching Workshop

This is a four-week workshop that covers the basics of intaglio printmaking. Participants will learn how to prep and coat copper plates, transfer designs onto plates, line etch, add tonal value, and print, resulting in a final edition of 5 prints. No previous printmaking or etching experience is required! Participants should have some artistic skills: drawing and painting skills. This workshop is open to ages 16 and up. Materials such as copper plates, printing paper, hard ground, etching tools, acid, newsprint, cleaning supplies, inks, etc will be covered under the class fee. Participants should bring a sketchbook, pencils, and other drawing materials to each session.

Class will take place from 10am-1pm on 3/2, 3/9, 3/16, 3/23. Here is the course timeline:

Week 1, 3/2: Demos on how to polish and coat plates, transfer designs onto plates, draw into the hardground, and etch plates

Week 2, 3/9: Demos on how to print plates and add aquatint (tonal value) to plates

Week 3 and 4, 3/16, 3/24: Work day- participants can have this time to finish etching and printing their plates
